Tibetan is the most widely spoken language of the Himalayas and an ancient language with Sanskrit roots. Apart from being spoken in Tibet, it is also used across some parts of North India such as Ladakh, Nepal, as well as Bhutan, and even has links with the language of nomads in Hunza valley in Pakistan.
For many thousands of years, Tibet has been isolated by world’s highest mountain range and harsh climate, making it’s language and culture have a long unbroken line till the 20th century.
Hence, by understanding Tibetan language, you can not only unlock a rich culture spanning 7000 years, but also access vast amounts of Buddhist, spiritual and ancient medicinal knowledge.

Fluent Tibetan is here to do exactly what its name says – get you fluent in Tibetan!
We provide online tutoring in colloquial and literary Tibetan for all levels of language learners.
Our students are usually not just interested in Tibetan or Himalayan languages, some also have the goal to use Tibetan to understand and translate ancient Buddhist texts, or Tibetan medicine.
We started with the aim to make Tibetan accessible to people across the world and to preserve Tibetan language and culture into the future.
We noticed that due to an interest in Tibetan Buddhism, many people around the world would like to learn Tibetan, but may not have quality teachers in their own country and don’t have the time or resources to travel to Tibetan speaking places to learn. Hence we wanted to create a way for students to learn remotely.

Tashi Delek! My name is Thupten and I’m the tutor at Fluent Tibetan.
As a native Tibetan speaker with over half a decade of language teaching experience, I am passionate about my language. I love teaching students of all levels spoken and written Tibetan.
I have a background in monastic studies (10 years) and degree in traditional Tibetan medicine, hence some of my students ask me to tutor them on Tibetan relating to Buddhist philosophy and the medical tantras.
I know that learning a new language can be overwhelming and grammar rules are confusing, so I explain the rules simply with examples and homework to help master the language.
I’m always very glad when people take interest in learning Tibetan as it helps preserve the language into the future. Especially at this time where many Tibetans are dispersed across the world. I believe my students help to carry this ancient language into the future and preserve it.
